Meet the Instructors

Driver Training Instructor Jay ChildressJay Childress was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He is the co-founder of the Roanoke Valley Driver Training School along with his wife, Nancy. Jay has retired from Roanoke City Schools after 33 years of service. He taught at James Madison Middle School for 27 years, serving 32 seasons as baseball coach. Jay has 36 years of experience as a driving instructor.

Jay received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Radford University. He holds a Masters degree in Elementary Administration, also from Radford University.

Jay lives in Vinton, Virginia with his wife Nancy, and they have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and 2 grandchildren.



Lyle McLaren is from Washington, D.C. A teacher for 39 years, Lyle began his teaching career in Montgomery County. He has been teaching at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem for 33 years, teaching eighth grade English. While in the Salem School system, Lyle has coached football, basketball and softball. Lyle has been with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School for 22 years.

Lyle received his BA degree in Elementary Education from Virginia Tech. He holds a Masters degree in Elementary Education Administration from Radford University.

Lyle lives in Salem with his wife Teresa, and they have 2 daughters, a son-in-law, and one grandson..



Edgar Moser was born and raised in Giles County and has been teaching for 37 years. He has taught in Montgomery County, Roanoke County and at Roanoke Valley Christian School and currently teaches at Salem High School. He has coached various sports including football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. Edgar is currently in his 17th year teaching driver's education at Salem High School. He was voted the Virginia Association of Driver Education and Traffic Safety Teacher of the Year in 2005. Edgar has 22 years of experience teaching driver's education and has been with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School for 17 years.

Edgar received his AAS Degree from New River Community College; his BS degree in Business Education from Radford College; and State Certification to teach Health, PE, and Driver's Ed. from Emory & Henry College. He also holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Radford University and a second Masters Degree in Evangelism and Church Planting from Liberty University, and also a Masters Degree from Union University in Christian Education. Edgar also serves as pastor/church planter of Life Pointe Church in Roanoke City.

Edgar lives in Roanoke and has been married to his wife Ginny for 35 years. They have one son Andy and daughter-in-law Lindsey.




Jerry Scharnus grew up in Newport News, Virginia and served in the Army for 2 years. He retired from Salem City Schools with 35 years service. Jerry taught Health & Physical Education at James River and Patrick Henry High Schools, and taught 27 years at Salem High School. He coached Salem High School football, helping lead the Spartans to 6 state championships. Jerry has been teaching driver's education for 41 years and he's been with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School for 30 years.

Jerry received his BS degree in Health and Physical Education from Virginia Tech. He played football for Tech for 3 years, being voted the MVP-defensive player in 1972.

Jerry lives in Salem with his wife Diana. They have 5 children and 5 grandchildren.




Thomas Chappell is from Kenbridge, VA. He has been a teacher with Roanoke City School for 9 years. Thomas is a physical education teacher at James Madison Middle School, where he coaches soccer and basketball. He also coached football for two years at Central High School before becoming a teacher in Roanoke. Thomas is entering his 5th year with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School.

Thomas received his BA degree in Physical Education from Longwood University. He lives in Roanoke County with his wife Somer, and his daughter.
